Define the PEM electrolysis experiment
PEM stands for proton exchange membrane. In PEM water electrolysis, electrical energy drives water splitting using a proton-conducting polymer membrane. This differs from using hydrogen in a fuel cell to generate electricity.
SSI’s existing records list electrolyzer cell hardware and separately specified membrane and catalyst components. A complete hydrogen generator, rated stack or balance-of-plant package must be reviewed separately; the component listings do not establish an integrated system rating.
Existing SSI component listings
- Electrolyzer Cell Hardware — Research electrolyzer hardware selected by cell chemistry, active area and plate or current-collector materials.
- Nafion™ N117 Membrane — Nafion N117 proton-exchange membrane enquiries for laboratory electrochemical cells and membrane research.
- Nafion™ NR212 Membrane (N212) — Nafion NR212, also requested as N212, for fuel-cell and electrochemical membrane requirements.
- Catalyst-Coated Membrane (CCM) — Catalyst-coated membranes configured by membrane grade, catalyst layers and the required active area.
- Iridium Oxide Catalyst (IrO₂) — Iridium oxide catalyst enquiries with the required grade, purity and laboratory quantity.
- Platinum Black Catalyst — Platinum black for electrode formulations requiring a specified unsupported platinum catalyst.
Specify the cell before selecting materials
- State PEM chemistry, active area, cell count and membrane outer cut dimensions.
- Identify catalyst composition/loading requirements and which electrode layers are required.
- Define target current, temperature, pressure and water-feed conditions for technical review.
- Provide flow-plate/current-collector materials, seals, connections and existing power-source details.
- Define measurement, gas handling, separation and protective-system scope independently.
Frequently asked questions
Can a generic electrolyzer cell be assumed suitable for PEM operation?
No. Confirm membrane, catalysts, wetted materials, seals and the selected operating conditions for the particular assembly. A material listing does not establish universal compatibility.
Are hydrogen production rate and pressure specified here?
No verified integrated-system rating is provided by these component records. Submit the required duty for configuration review and a documented proposal.
